Before hitting our campsite near Petra, we stopped to see Shobak Castle. Once called Mont Real Castle, this impressive fortress sits high above the landscape around it. This castle was a Crusader castle until it fell to the mighty Saladin after an 18 month siege.
It always amazes me that something so old can still be around. Of course, there has been and continues to be restoration work, but these ruins were awe inspiring. I have always loved the history surrounding the Crusades, and although living here has given me a different perspective of those times, it was just so cool to stand in a fortress where Crusaders and Saladin once dwelt.

Geoff and Liam explored an area beneath the castle.
It contained aqueducts as well as a staircase carved inside the mountain
so the castle dwellers could walk down those
instead of climbing down the mountain!
