Thanksgiving in Zagreb, part 4

Saturday morning, the Saxtons took us to Mirogoj, a very famous and beautiful cemetery on the outskirts of town.  It isn't that old.  It was planned by civic leaders, beginning in the late 1800's, but it wasn't finished until 1929.  But it is massive, and gorgeous, and thus it is a notable site-seeing spot.

"Obiteli" is Croatian for family--many generations share one plot,
which is rented.  People pay as long as they can or are willing.
Once the plot is no longer being rented,
the bodies are removed, cremated, and placed in the crematorium.
Then new families are eligible to rent the plot.
Thus you'll see newer gravestones among the old.

After a cold stroll at Mirogoj, we stopped at Josh and Anna's favorite neighborhood restaurant for lunch.  It was warm and the food was delicious.  And the patrons and waitstaff were so NICE.  We just love the Balkan people.
